You’ve have missed the deadline to register for our hike on Saturday 3rd February 2018!

Registration is now CLOSED for the 1st North Leigh Scout Group 18 Mile Hike 2018!

We are ‘full to the brim’ with over 300 people taking place again this year!

Registration for the 2018 North Leigh Hike has now closed, but please join us again next year in 2019 for another amazing adventure day. It will be open to all Oxfordshire Explorers, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, their friends, families and even their dogs! It provides the ideal opportunity to get the whole community out on an adventure and to raise some money for your section. This year again we have had over 300 of you register for this fantastic day and we look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 3rd February 2018.

If you have already registered, you will soon be receiving your START TIMES via email and you need to make sure that you have completed your Activity Form and that you bring it along with you on the day and that you have paid your Entrance Fee of £6 via your Group Treasurer for each person registered and taking part.

Two GPS tracked routes with regular manned checkpoints

The routes will be slightly amended this year and announced closer to the date. We will provide this information to you once registered and it will provide a map, way points and an electronic version for you to input into a GPS system if you would like too.

We will have two routes again the shorter 8 mile hike that is ideal for Cubs and Beavers and a real tough 18 mile challenge for the Scouts and Explorers.

This event is a Winter Event that we try to ensure goes ahead, whatever the weather! Wind, rain, hail or even snow, come prepared and expect the worse as you not only battle the 8 mile or 18 mile walk, but the guaranteed inclement winter weather. If it is safe for us to run the event, we will run the event!

There will be regular checkpoints along the route and any one unable to continue will be collected and returned to Central Control by our support vehicles and wonderful support staff.

The route will wind through the woodlands and fields surrounding North Leigh and the surrounding villages– again in a figure of eight, the Turner Hall in North Leigh as the central base for the start and finish of the hike.


How to enter

Sections leaders need to create teams and register them here and send payment by Sunday 14th January 2018. There will be no changes allowed to Teams and personnel within 4 days of the start of the event.

The fee to take part is £6.00 per person. All participants will receive a badge at the end. The entrance fee covers the cost of managing the safety around the event and is non-refundable.

  1. Register your section’s teams using these google forms.
    • You will need to sort your teams out before completing the registration form
    • The 18 mile hike is for Scouts and Explorer teams. Each team can have between 4 and 8 walkers and they do not need an adult to walk with them:
    • The 8 mile hike is for Cubs and Beavers teams. These teams need to have two DBS checked adults and a maximum of 6 children:
    • All walkers, of all ages must complete an Activity Form and bring it with them on the day. No form no walking!
  2. Can section leaders please collect £6 per walker and send one payment for the section to North Leigh Scout Group. Once you have registered teams we will contact section leaders with payment details. All payments to be made by Dec 31st 2017
  3. Each section needs to provide one DBS checked volunteer to help run the event (man the checkpoints, help at base with registration, drive support vehicles)

Everyone walking must complete an Activity Form

Refreshments for sale

Bacon and sausage butties, tea, coffee, drinks cakes and other light snacks will be available for /sale at the Turner Hall for breakfast and lunch. Bring a packed lunch if you want too, or just enjoy the home-made hot food on sale, all reasonably priced. The hall the start for all distances, the mid point for the longer distances at lunch and the end point for all.

Car parking

Parking is available at North Leigh Business Centre and we will provide a minibus service to take you from your car to our starting point. We have the facility for dropping off at the Turner Hall, Church Road, North Leigh but all parking is to be at North Leigh Business Centre.

Return minibuses will be available throughout the day.

Please note, as Event Organisers we cannot accept any responsibility for vehicles or possessions left in them when attending this event.

Boot Wash & Other Facilities

Muddy boots, don’t worry, there is a boot wash facility for you before you get back in the car. We have toilets, support vehicles that can collect teams or individuals that are struggling or need assistance and of course, First Aid in attendance at all times.


Well behaved, child friendly dogs are welcome provided the owners take full responsibility for them.

Volunteers needed to man the check points!

If you want to take part but don’t want to hike you could help man the checkpoints. All checkpoints will be within easy road access. Please email us at if you can spare some time to help us make this event a great success. We are also asking for each Section attending to support us again this year by providing at least one volunteer. If your Group or Section cannot supply a volunteer to help, you will not be able to take part in this event. Volunteers with current DBS Scouting Checks are very much welcomed.
